Founded in 1922, E H Smith is now one of the largest privately owned building materials suppliers to the construction industry in the UK, employing over 500 people, with a group turnover in excess of £115m (2007/8)
We have been involved in major building projects for almost a century and have an established pedigree that demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the specialist enveloping needs of specifiers employed on multi-million pound contracts throughout the UK and overseas.
Through our network of depots and fleet of over 70 trucks equipped with self-offload facilities, we can service the most demanding construction schedules.
Our Commitment to Sustainable Practice
As well as our commitment to providing material solutions, we have undertaken a number of internal measures to improve our environmental performance. We ensure that any timber products sold through our CoC accredited branches are supplied by FSC, PEFC and MTCC approved partners. This means that from forest to customer we meet all criteria for the safe and responsible sale of sustainable timber products or services.
Our efforts also extend to our managed fleet of delivery vehicles. All EH Smith HGV drivers have received training on SAFED techniques. This training has been proven to reduce fuel consumption by 5% or more per year, in turn reducing C02 emissions and generating an overall saving of over £25,000 in fuel cost for the business.
Finally, we have now ensured that all branches buy or use only recycled pallets. We have also introduced schemes at our larger branches to help improve recycling efforts by separating cardboard, hardcore and wood waste for processing by selected specialist companies.
As a result of our hard work, following an assessment by an independent body, we were awarded ISO 14001 certification. This certification has been achieved by less than 1% of UK businesses.
We are continually looking for ways to improve and have a number of initiatives underway from recycling office waste to the fuel efficiency of our company vehicles. We are also members of the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB)
