For the fourth time since 2010, EH Smith has won the Environmental Award at the Builders Merchants Awards For Excellence. The judges praised the company for maintaining its environemtal ethos which has helped it to stand out from the crowd in recent years. In particular, the judges were impressed this year with an incentive scheme which had been introduced for staff to play their own part in recycling waste items such as pallets.
Since starting the Sustainable Products section of the merchant in 2010, EH Smith has won many plaudits for changing its stock profile and many of its operational practises to be more focussed on its environmental impact. It has entered the renewable energy market, been involved in several low energy construction projects and run seminars and training sessions on understanding low energy buildings. The Branch Manager of the Sustainable Products department, Andy Oram, believes that being a large privately owned business has helped them to achieve what they have. "Our directors are supportive of trying new things to ensure that the business doesn't just stand still. Having been established since 1922, we have survived wars and recessions to still be one of the leading merchants in the sector. We don't have the shareholder pressures of the giant national merchants, but we do have the size and scale of business to be able to try innovative products."
Mr Oram believes that the message of low energy and low carbon building will gather pace over the coming years. "Our national energy policy is going to have an effect on our building policy. How we generate and consume energy will change the way we build and run our housing and commercial building stock. Hopefully at EH Smith we have demonstrated through winning this award again, that we are ready for the changes that will follow in our industry and will be finding more new products and ways of working to stay at the forefront of these exciting developments."
The award was presented by comedian Tim Vine.
