What is Airtightness?

One of the most common misconceptions when thinking of Airtightness for the first time is the idea that the building becomes a sealed unit and its inhabitants are dependent on mechanical ventilation for their fresh air. This is not the case. Airtightness can best be described as plugging the leaks that shouldn't be there in the first place. The diagram below shows the difference between a draughty, leaky house and an 'airtight' house.

What is the Solution?

Internal wall sectionEH Smith are working in conjuction with Ecological Building Systems, an Irish market leader in energy efficient and ecological products, and the global market leader in Airtightness and Moisture management, Pro-Clima.

Founded in 1981, pro-clima are world leading innovators of 'Intelligent' airtight membranes. Based in Germany, pro clima leads the field in the development and manufacture of intelligent, high performance sealing systems for thermal insulationin constructions. pro clima engineers and specialists have worked to produce integrated solutions for thermal insulation in timber and masonry constructions and today the company is active in over 20 countries.

pro clima provides complete airtightness and moisture management systems including intelligent high-performance vapour control membranes (or vapour barriers), vapour permeable external membranes as well as a complete range of glues, tapes and seals.
